Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT)
A BAT is performed most often when an employee is suspected of being intoxicated. Found in beer, wine and liquor, ethyl alcohol is an intoxicating ingredient which can be detected during a breath alcohol test. The breath alcohol test determines how much alcohol is in the individuals blood stream by measuring the amount of alcohol in the air the person exhales during the test.
Blood Alcohol Testing
During a blood alcohol test, blood is drawn and tested for traces of ethyl alcohol. A blood alcohol test will determine the presence and the amount of ethyl alcohol (found in beer, wine and liquor) found in an individuals blood. The time frame for this type of detection is dependent on several factors including amount of alcohol consumption, sexual activity and the individuals metabolism rate. This test should only be used if you suspect an employee is currently under the influence of alcohol.
Ethyl Glucoronide (EtG) Urine Alcohol Testing
A urine alcohol test will determine the presence of ethyl alcohol metabolite (ethyl glucoronide). Generally speaking, the window for detection is up to 80 hours after alcohol is ingested. Test results from a urine alcohol test a usually available within 2-3 days after the test is performed. This method of alcohol testing is recommended for individuals whom you’ve suspected have ingested alcohol within the past 2-3 days and are under a zero tolerance program.
Ethyl Glucoronide (EtG) Hair Alcohol Testing
The hair alcohol test is similar to the urine alcohol test as it also checks for ethyl alcohol metabolite in an individual. However, with this test, a sample of the individuals hair is tested rather than using a urine sample. Test results are usually available within 5 business days. The benefit of a hair alcohol test vs. a urine alcohol test is the window of time for testing stretches from 7 days up to 90 days from consumption. Businesses who benefit from this test include those with a zero tolerance policy or by courts for persons who have been convicted of a previous DUI.
